Every once in a while I remember that Achilles threatened to eat Hector raw and I am filled with joy
He wanted that man’s body dishonored. He wanted it torn apart by teeth and on god he would have done it himself if he could
Despite current conceptions, Achilles didn’t have a reputation as a hothead. He was half god, half man, educated by the most learned being in the world at that time. His character was more defined by having a stick up his ass about protocol with a dash of immaturity in dealing with his feelings, but he was considered one of the most civilized Greeks. He often took men for ransom in battle rather than slaughtering them. He was fair-minded.
And in returning to the fight to run down Hector, he gives all of that up. His honor, his mercy, his life, and he’d give up his humanity as well if he could just for the chance to tear Hector apart with his own teeth
Anyway “joy” wasn’t the right word but it’s like, god, yes, give into your worst self because acting pious and proper got you fucking nothing, you are doomed by forces greater than man and none of this fucking mattered at all anyway. Dishonor his body in a way that dishonors yourself just as badly.
the thing I miss most from now working full time is all the community groups and volunteering that are always like 10:30am on a Wednesday and seemingly only attended by stay at home parents and retirees
